Rona Ramon— A Hero in Her Own Right

In 2003, Rona’s husband Ilan Ramon, the first Israeli astronaut, was killed in the Columbia space shuttle accident, and in 2009, her 21-year-old son, Asaf, was killed in an Israeli Air Force training accident. In honor of her late husband and son, Rona established the Ramon Foundation, an educational organization which focuses on leadership and space education among Israeli youth. Rona was posthumously awarded the Israel Prize for lifetime achievement, which her three remaining children, Tal, Yiftach, and Noa, accepted on her behalf.
