Hayim Nahman Bialik on the First Hebrew City

This writing by Hayim Nahman Bialik (1873-1934), the national poet of Israel, expresses the inspiration and wonder he felt being part of the creation of the First Hebrew City — Tel Aviv.

Hayim Nahman Bialik on the First Hebrew City

A Hebrew creation such as Tel-Aviv is to me equal to centuries of creation in the Diaspora. I wonder if somewhere else on the globe such a place exist for an Israelite. The sight of building such houses from foundation to top, by Jews only, is spectacular.

A creation of a complete Hebrew city is sufficient enough to put some faith in the hearts of those who doubt and question – that the revival of the land is an undeniable fact.

Here, in Tel-Aviv I feel with all my senses that I had ever had, nor can I have, another homeland but this place. Blessed are all the builders that started our eternal upbuilding in this special corner of the world.
